Kevin Gruber is in his fourth year as an assistant coach at Southern Methodist University, where he oversees the Mustangs' freshman/novice athletes. Gruber brings a variety of coaching experience to SMU after having previously coached at NCAA Division I, II and III level institutions. Before arriving on the Hilltop, Gruber spent two years as head rowing coach at the University of Charleston in Charleston, West Virginia. While in Charleston he directed all aspects of the varsity-level men's and women's rowing programs. Gruber also served as Charleston's sports information director, games management coordinator, and regatta director for the annual West Virginia Governor's Cup Regatta. Gruber spent the 2001-02 as a graduate assistant coach with the women's rowing program at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. In 2000-01, Gruber served as an assistant coach at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where he coached the novice men's squad. Gruber began rowing at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where he competed for the men's club team from 1996-2000. As a UMass oarsman, Gruber earned medals at both the New England Rowing Championships and the Champion International Collegiate Regatta. The Collegeville, Pa., native graduated from Massachusetts in 2000 with bachelor's degrees in sport management and journalism. In August 2002 he earned his M.S. in physical education-athletic coaching education from West Virginia University.
